So THIS is what it’s like to date as a single mom

June 10, 2009

I may not be in a relationship at the moment, but The Yooper and I pretty much act like we’re in one most of the time. It’s been interesting to read about so many other single parent bloggers trying to navigate the world of dating and relationships, and now I’m unexpectedly getting a turn at it.

With Anna’s paternal grandparents taking her every other weekend, I feel like my schedule is rather flexible. Every other weekend is plenty of time for a social life… but not so flexible when it comes to spending time with a guy.

I have nights (Anna goes to bed around 8), but that keeps us limited to hanging out at my place and watching TV (which is totally cool at the moment, since there’s still a little hockey left). OK, so nights and every other weekend are a pretty good deal…

But I just got a good taste of single mom inflexibility today. The Yooper is going to an amusement park with his best friend on Thursday and he invited me along. If I didn’t need that day in order to work on summer school stuff, it would be really tempting. (Anna’s grandma would watch her every day this summer if I let her.) Darn you responsibility!

Oh well… at least The Yooper and I get some alone time next week during the few days our separate trips up north overlap.

And God, I wish I wasn’t such an impatient person! I start wondering when The Yooper and I will move from acting like we’re dating to actually dating, but then I have to remind myself that we only reconnected with each other 3 weeks ago. No need to rush (but it feels like it’s been a lifetime already!)
